Diddly Squat at Clarksons Farm 4

Clarkson’s Farm Series 4 is more of the same, perhaps slightly muted after the resolution to the farm shop planning issues—so much so that the Diddly Squat Farm Shop barely features. What does get prominence is the new farmhand Harriet Cowan. Was she cast or really found by Charlie? She’s there to help out while Kaleb is on sabbatical doing his “tour,” which looks like a one-man show. However, fear not, because the proposed pub rekindles the planning wars over a picnic site used for various activities, including “dogging.” Jeremy Clarkson isn’t about give ujp a fantastic story line thats a gift from the TV gods.

I like Clarkson’s Farm, and there’s no doubt his collective approach, support for British producers, ability to amplify opinions, and affable rogue persona make this compelling TV. However, “Diddly Squat” it isn’t—I suspect everyone associated with the program has their cup running over with the commercial money-making machine riding on his celebrity (or is it notoriety?). Like the Kardashians, this merry band of very British characters are making regular trips to the bank with pockets full of cash. While Jeremy, Harriet, and Kaleb are all contributing to the conversation, and Jeremy seems sincere in his farming commitment, he’s not in the same position as the farmers surrounding me here in South Cambridgeshire. Yes, they have cafes and farm shops and suffer the weather, but they don’t have a lucrative Amazon deal feeding the commercial machine. And at the end of this series, when Jeremy is standing in front of the whiteboard working out his profits, add in the millions from the Amazon deal!
